World’s Unfriendliest Cities

World’s Unfriendliest Cities

Travel + Leisure online magazine released their list of the world’s 30 unfriendliest cities. Readers had the task of ranking 266 world cities according to how friendly or unfriendly its citizens are. The results might surprise you, as almost half of the entries (13) on the list are U.S. cities and most of them actually made it to the top 10.

This comes as a surprise because the definite American trait is friendliness, but it seems that things change.

Anyhow, let’s take a look at the list:

1. Moscow, Russia

Tourists believe that the citizens of Moscow are not particularly friendly and heart-warming. Readers ranked its culinary scene as dead last and there were many complaints about the traffic. All in all, their tip was that every tourist should book private tours to help them navigate the city’s landmarks and not to expect any help from the locals.

2. Atlantic City, New Jersey

Readers didn’t have anything nice to say about Atlantic City either – “It is fun if you like to gamble and don’t mind rude, fast-paced people.” People believe that it’s a combination of rude people and not-so-fancy casinos. All in all, a big let down.

3. St. Petersburg, Russia

On third place is Russia’s second largest city, St Petersburg. And while tourists are impressed with the city’s architecture and landmarks (the Winter Palace, the new Mariinsky II Theater, the Church of the Savior of the Spilled Blood), the city’s residents are far from hospitable.

4. Marseilles, France

Readers have decided that the fourth rudest city in the world is the French port town of Marseilles. Even the French seem to be conflicted about their second largest city. “Either they love it or hate it,” says Matthieu Gamet. Even though respondents feel that the city is gritty and relatively unfriendly, most of them would agree that it’s a lot more accommodating than Paris.

Places 5 through 9 are reserved for U.S. cities:

5. Los Angeles, California

According to survey respondents, the city is filled with hot, good-looking people, but they tend to come off as pretentious. One visitor’s comment wraps up LA’s score, “Unhelpful, rude people trying to scam you for everything.” Yikes!

6. New York City, New York

Truth be told, this was no surprise. New York actually landed #1 on Travel + Leisure’s list of 15 Unfriendliest Cities in America. Respondents believe that New Yorkers aren’t the friendliest bunch on the planet. New York truly has a lot to offer, just don’t ask any of the locals for directions. However, respondents believe that everyone should look past the unfriendliness and visit NYC as there really is much to see.

7. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The City of Brotherly Love isn’t so brotherly any more. More than a few respondents claimed that visiting Philly for a basketball or hockey game as an away fan is not advised. The home fans are bound to pick on you and it definitely won’t be a pleasurable experience.

8. Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore didn’t live up to its reputation of being “Charm Town”. The recent protests are still fresh in everybody’s memories and it most definitely affected the final score. But now, after the protests have ended we can advise everyone to visit this great city – go catch a play or enjoy in the cities great culinary scene.

9. Las Vegas, Nevada

Go on, be honest, you were expecting Las Vegas in the top 10. However, the City of Sins is at least honest about itself – what you see is what you get whether you like it or not. It is filled with shady people, but hey, it’s Las Vegas. If at least one person hadn’t tried to scam you during your stay it’s like you’ve never really visited Las Vegas in the first place.

10. Cannes, France

Glamorous Cannes lands 10th on Travel + Leisure’s list of the least friendly cities in the world. This city is home to many rich celebrities and so naturally respondents described it a bit snobby. “Cannes is like an aging beauty,” a respondent commented. And they all agree that it’s much friendlier towards major spenders.

In 11th place is the Chinese capital, Beijing, after which come two American cities – Miami and Washington. The only German town on the list is Frankfurt, and it’s the 14th rudest city on our list, again followed by two American cities – Boston (15th) and Providence (16th).

There are two Italian cities on the list: Naples (17th) and Milan (24th).

The French have a grand total of four cities on the list. Except Marseille (2nd) and Cannes (10th), there is Nice (22nd) and Lyon (26th).

Except Beijing there’s another Chinese city on the list, Shanghai (27th).

·         On the other hand, the Irish city of Galway has been voted as the friendliest city in the world.
