When it comes to hurricanes, some U.S. cities are more at risk than others. And a disappointing fact is that major cities are still vulnerable to hurricanes even after being struck with these devastating storms. According to NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division, these 9 cities have suffered the most due to hurricanes.
9. New York City, New York
It has been a long time since the worst and deadliest hurricane that struck New York City in 1938. New England Hurricane killed more than 600 people and caused terrible damage, but luckily, the Big Apple hasn’t seen a storm of that strength since. However, one of the worst hurricanes that happened recently was Hurricane Sandy in 2012 that surprised the whole country after it slowed down but gained power again and suddenly changed course hitting Coney Island.
Wind gusts reached 100 mph and there were 159 casualties and about $65 million in damages. All in all, New York City has been hit by three major hurricanes in the last 115 years. With the climate change, New York may be at even more risk in the future but the government has spent $20 million on the protection of the cities shores.
